Long Lasting Teething Cookies

The thing I hate about the “teething rusks” that you buy at the store are how quickly they fall apart. I mean, I understand why… nobody wants their baby chocking, but they don’t really do much for teething. A good, hard but also chewy, bar is exactly what a baby needs when they are cutting teeth. These will feel so good on their gnawing gums, keep them busy, and they love the taste!

Teething Cookies

For the cookies, we are going to use oat flour. To make this, you simply put the oats into a food processor and blend until it is a flour-like consistency. (I haven’t tried it, but I bet the baby oatmeal would work just as good too!) In a medium-large mixing bowl, mash up one banana with a fork until smooth. Add in the oat flour, coconut oil, maple syrup, and cinnamon and mix until dough-like.

Flour a surface well and roll the ball of dough around in it until all the sides are covered. Flour your hands. At this point, you can just use your hands to break off and form some cookies. Long and oval work best for baby hands, in my opinion. You can also press out the dough to be about 1/4″ thick and use a cookie cutter to cut the dough into shapes. I used a dog bone cookie cutter because it also works well in babies hands…. and I think I’m funny sometimes. (The best part is the dog ate my first batch, so maybe not my greatest idea.)
*If you have an older baby/toddler and want a bit of a chewier cookie, just add in an additional 1/2 tbsp coconut oil. RA loves these too!

 

Then you bake them in a preheated oven at 375°F for 20 minutes. Let them cool and let the baby gnaw away!

Long Lasting Teething Cookies

Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 20 minutes
Servings: 8-12 cookies

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups multi-grain oats
  • 1 medium banana
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil – softened/melted
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • scant 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • ~ 1/4 cup flour for surface (extra oat flour/ all purpose/wheat/etc.)

Steps:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F
  2. Ground up the oats in a food processor until it becomes a flour.
  3. In a medium-large mixing bowl, mash the banana with a fork until smooth
  4.  Add in the coconut oil, syrup, and cinnamon and mix until doughy. Form a dough ball.
  5. Flour your surface and hands well (any flour will do) and roll the dough ball around until the outside is covered.
  6. Press out dough to about 1/4″ thick. Form cookies or use cookie cutter to cut cookie shapes.
  7. Lay the cookies down on a baking sheet with parchment paper
  8. Bake for 20 minutes. Let cool completely (it will harden more as it cools). Then, let the babies ENJOY!
